This article aims to provide an updated compass for those working with packaging who want to stay abreast of changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/waste-and-recycling\/packaging-waste_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Directive 94\/62\/EC<\/strong><\/a>, known as <\/span><b>Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, represents the first major European reference on the subject of packaging. It introduced fundamental principles such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waste prevention at source<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the recycling and recovery of energy and materials<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, this directive has undergone several updates, with the aim of harmonizing Member States&#039; policies and increasing recycling performance. At Teamplast, we have closely monitored these developments to ensure our solutions are always compliant and proactive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>PPWR Regulation Coming Soon: What It Includes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real regulatory turning point will be represented by the new <\/span><b>PPWR \u2013 Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, currently under approval. Unlike the PPWD, the PPWR will be a <\/span><b>regulation directly applicable in all Member States<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, without the need for national implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What it includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obligation to render <\/span><b>all packaging recyclable by 2030<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limits to the <\/span><b>over-design and unnecessary packaging<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promotion of the <\/span><b>reuse and returnable systems<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recycled content target for plastic<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For companies like ours, this regulation is comforting as we have always believed in perfectly recyclable monomaterials and their reuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Environmental labeling of packaging: obligations and tools<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1 January 2023, in Italy it is mandatory to label packaging with information useful for separate waste collection, based on the <\/span><b>Legislative Decree 116\/2020<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indicate <\/span><b>material<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> And <\/span><b>identification code<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to Decision 97\/129\/EC<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clearly communicate the methods of <\/span><b>disposal (e.g. collection of plastic, paper, glass, etc.)<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We at Teamplast, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We began this product labeling process back in October 2020, also informing all our customers of the impending change, anticipating the decree by more than two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, by January 2023, most of our customers were already compliant with the Decree with their packaging from all of 2021 and 2022, a practice that was advantageous for them as they were not forced to discard any old supplies. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We support our customers in <\/span><b>creation of compliant labels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, providing technical and graphic information, but also advice on how to make communication simple and understandable for the end consumer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Producer Responsibilities and Obligations for SMEs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest challenges is represented by the so-called <\/span><b>EPR \u2013 Extended Producer Responsibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In practice, anyone placing packaging on the market is required to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finance the management of waste generated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the environmental impact of their products<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comply with specific technical and information requirements<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For SMEs, this entails the need to <\/span><b>to continuously update oneself<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but also to choose reliable partners.
