When talking about sustainability in packaging<\/strong> And circular economy<\/strong>, the numbers help us understand where we are and where we can get to. Eurostat<\/a> recently published updated data on the packaging waste management<\/strong> in Europe for the year 2023.<\/p>\n An interesting analysis which, despite some heterogeneity between the various member countries, offers a useful framework for evaluating the trend of the plastic recycling in the EU<\/strong>, a central theme for all companies in the sector such as Teamplast<\/strong>, specialized in flexible packaging in LDPE and HDPE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In 2023, 1,000 new units were produced in the European Union. 79.7 million tons of packaging waste<\/strong>, equal to 177.8 kg per capita<\/strong>. This is a decrease compared to 2022 (-8.7 kg\/inhabitant), but still more than 21 kg in excess<\/strong> compared to 2013.<\/p>\n What is surprising is the data relating to plastic packaging<\/strong>, which represent the 19.8% of the total<\/strong>. A percentage lower than that of paper and cardboard (40%)<\/strong>, but still superior to the glass (18.8%)<\/strong> and to metals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Specifically, every European citizen has generated 35.3 kg of plastic packaging waste<\/strong>, of which 14.8 kg were actually recycled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Looking at data over time 2013\u20132023<\/strong>, a clear trend emerges:<\/p>\n +6.4 kg<\/strong> per capita plastic packaging waste generated;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n +3.8 kg<\/strong> per capita of plastic recycled in the same period;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Recycling rate increased from 38.2% to 42.1%.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n These numbers tell us that, despite the overall growth in consumption, The industry is making significant progress in the recovery and recycling of plastic materials<\/strong>. However, the gap between manufactured and recycled plastic remains significant and must be closed.<\/p>\n Eurostat data also offer us a comparison between the various Member countries of the European Union<\/strong>. In 2023, the countries with the highest plastic packaging recycling rates are:<\/p>\n Belgium<\/strong>: 59,5%<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Latvia<\/strong>: 59,2%<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Slovakia<\/strong>: 54,1%<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n At the other extreme we find:<\/p>\n Hungary<\/strong>: 23,0%<\/p>\n<\/li>\n France<\/strong>: 25,7%<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Austria<\/strong>: 26,9%<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n And Italy? With a recycling rate just below 50%<\/strong>, our country is placed eighth in the standings<\/strong>, well above the European average (42.1%)<\/strong>.
