Polypropylene is one of the most suitable plastic materials for the production of food packaging. According to the regulations, in fact, it does not pose any risk of contamination for the health of consumers, it does not modify or alter the composition of the foods with which it comes into contact, nor does it cause a deterioration of the organoleptic characteristics of foods.

Compared to polyethylene, polypropylene is a harder and more heat-resistant material.

Thanks to its properties, pp is widely used in the production of food packaging, plastic films, labels and rigid packaging. It offers high protection from light and heat, preserving the quality of the packaged product. In addition, it can be used to retain aromas or allow products that require it to breathe.

In addition to the packaging of specific food products, it has various uses for the production of bags or packaging that require high aesthetic qualities.

In this regard, PP is ideal for the fashion and textile industry, preventing yellowing of packaged products and showing strong aesthetic properties.

PP cast, in particular, guarantees excellent sealing and high resistance, creates a good barrier to humidity (it is therefore perfect for dry products, such as breadsticks, biscuits or dry pasta), but a poor barrier to oxygen and aromas. It protects from sunlight, heat and air, preserving the quality of the product and keeping its organoleptic properties (taste, aroma, flavour) unaltered.

Peculiar characteristics of polypropylene (PP):

  • High thermal resistance, up to approximately 130°C;
  • Excellent chemical resistance to acids, solvents and oils;
  • Rigidity and lightness;
  • Good dimensional stability and tensile strength;
  • Resistance to environmental stress cracking;
  • Low moisture absorption;
  • Non-toxic material suitable for contact with food;
  • Excellent barrier effect to moisture and light;
  • High transparency, ideal for packaging with high aesthetic qualities;
  • Possibility of treatments to preserve the aromas of the packaged product.
