The European Parliament has given final approval to the new Regulation on the prevention of plastic granule losses throughout the supply chain. The goal is ambitious and necessary: to drastically reduce environmental pollution caused by microplastics, a problem now central to European sustainability strategies.

What does the new European Regulation provide?

The new European regulations apply to all operators handling more than 5 tonnes of plastic granules per year, as well as to intra- and extra-EU transporters, regardless of the means used. Companies will be required to adopt specific risk management plans for each facility, including:

  • Containment and collection systems during loading, unloading and handling phases;

  • Leak-proof packaging and safe storage procedures;

  • Staff training on the correct use and management of granules;

  • Procedures for responding to accidental spills;

  • Monitoring losses and updating operating practices.

The regulation will enter into force 20 days after publication in the Official Journal of the EU. Its implementation will be gradual: from 2 to 3 years depending on the type of operator, with longer implementation periods for maritime transport.
